NEWS FLASH:
Recently it was published that a new study found that abnormal breast development in pre-puberty boys (gynecomastia), seem to be caused by Tea Tree and Lavender essential oils found in personal-care products.
Shampoos, lotions, soaps (and other products) were mentioned as personal-care products which contained the abovementioned essential oils as ingredients, and is said to have an estrogenic-like effect.
The purpose of that article was to raise awareness, so the public and physicians can be aware of it.
A pediatric endocrinologist consulted with five boys who presented this problem. After investigating, he found that the boys had all used over-the-counter hair and skin health-care products containing these two oils.
It was further reported that the activity of estrogen oils appeared to be mimicked and male hormones were suppressed when theses oils were tested on human breast cancer cells. The boy’s problems were all resolved when they discontinued using the products.
It was not mentioned if the boys were placed on any medical drugs to counteract their condition, or if the essential oils used in the tests were the same as those used in the products.
My personal comments on the above are that five boys with a common type of product use are not sufficient to submit as (almost) conclusive evidence. If a hundred (or more boys) were consulted, with the same problem, and all were using the same product type, it would cause one to take notice and be reason for further and deeper investigation.
Even though scores of teenagers and pre-puberty boys (and girls) use products for their skin due to acne, pimples and other skin problems, I am certain that even if a hundred boys diagnosed with gynecomastia were consulted, many would not be using these types of products; but even if they were, there are other ingredients that could be the causing factor.
In the above scenario, only two ingredients i.e. Tea Tree and Lavender essential oils were singled out. ALL ingredients would need further investigation.
It is a known fact that certain chemicals may leach from containers into products. One such chemical is BPA, which is a compound originally made as a chemical estrogen. BPA is used as a building block for the production of polycarbonate plastic products, which include packaging containers, food storage containers, tin can linings, baby bottles and certain toys. BPA produces premature puberty, changes in growth and reproductive abnormalities as well as weight gain.
DEHA is a chemical used to make certain plastic wraps soft and clingy. This chemical has the ability to seep out of the wrap in small amounts and penetrate especially fatty products such as milk, butter, yoghurt, cheese, meat and any other fat-containing substance. Tests revealed that it took as little as half an hour for seepage to occur.
Animal protein is not a clean burning fuel. We are what we eat, and we become what they eat. Animals farmed for the food industry are given antibiotics and growth hormones. Large quantities of these hormones are deposited in their tissue and are passed on to us. These ingested growth hormones have been linked as a cause of advanced maturation in young girls and boys including gynecomastia.
Essential have been referred to as the “hormone” or “life force” of the plant. Each essential oil varies from the next and certain oils are contraindicated. For this reason knowledge and care is needed when dealing with essential oils. Anything used outside of moderation is dangerous… even drinking too much water! Adulterated and synthetic oils are equally as dangerous.
Most companies as profit driven and will not use large amounts of high quality essential oils. Many products contain synthetic or adulterated oils. As far as I am concerned, five boys diagnosed with gynecomastia, all using Tea Tree and Lavender essential oil products, can not place the blame of their condition solely on essential oils until ALL factors have been examined.
My son (now 21) and my daughter (turning 19) have used, and have been exposed to essential oils since birth and neither one has shown nothing but fantastic results. Since their very first tooth appeared, one drop of Tea Tree essential oil was placed on their toothbrush and their teeth were cleaned and their mouths disinfected with it. My daughter, to this day, does not have ONE cavity in her mouth.
I will continue to share more benefits with those interested in the health advantages of essential oils, at a later date.
Best wishes
Cecilia
